Belinda Lee
Belinda Lee (b.1951) is an artist living and working in St. Louis, Missouri. Lee draws inspiration from the landscape utilizing restrained palettes and nuanced tonal shifts. Her paintings unfold slowly, inviting sustained looking, as subtle variations in color and surface suggest spatial depth. Through a rotating vocabulary of forms such as trees, thickets, and ponds at varying levels of obfuscation, her compositions become a site where repetition highlights differences implying how our lived experiences are based on perspective.
Lee received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis and her MFA in Painting from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. She has shown extensively locally and throughout the United States.
Her paintings are in the collections of the St. Louis Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art at St. Louis University and numberous private collections. She taught drawing, design and painting for 17 years in the College of Art in the Sam Fox School at Washington University. For five of those years she oversaw the Study Abroad Program for Art and Architecture in Florence, Italy. She has participated in artist residencies at the Burren College of Art, Ballyvaughan, Ireland, Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colorado and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont.
