THIBAULT

COL Gallery is pleased to present recent paintings by Thibault (b.1980, Minneapolis).

Thibault is an interdisciplinary artist based in Southern California, known for their vibrant, mixed-media paintings that explore themes of queer liberation, transformation, and renewal. Drawing inspiration from the rich landscape of Los Angeles, personal meditative imagery, and spiritualist traditions in painting, Thibault creates work that reflects their own journey of self-discovery and identity.

In this recent series, created between 2023 and 2024, Thibault (formerly Sarah Thibault), channels a significant life shift marked by a move from the Bay Area to Los Angeles in 2022, and their process of coming out as queer and trans.

Their work invites viewers into a unique internal space, the mythical land beyond the rainbow. These intimately-scaled paintings evoke an imaginary realm, utilizing a vivid palette of jewel tones and fluorescents to capture the essence of transformation and renewal.

Thibault’s practice intertwines mythologies from the Wild West, psychedelic interpretations of California sceneries, and tropes from historical landscape painting to offer a surrealistic queering of the natural world.

Recent solo exhibitions include shows at Dreamsong Gallery, Minneapolis (2024, 2022); Fahrenheit Madrid (2020); and Casa Lu, Mexico City (2020). Thibault has also participated in notable group exhibitions at venues such as Eleanor Harwood, San Francisco (2024); Good Mother Gallery, Los Angeles (2023); and Sotheby's x Jerry Gogosian, New York (2022).
